The Silver Bay girls hoop team lost to McGregor 57-52 at home last Friday. Coach John Sandstrom gave credit to the girls, saying they kept the game close all the way only to fall in the final seconds.
Olya Wright, the lone qualifier for the state meet from the North Shore team, reports that the first day of the meet, in which her classic race was held, was “windy and warmer” than usual. She placed 24th and felt a little disappointed and like it was “not my best.” The second day of the meet they woke up to -17 degrees F and by the time she raced in the afternoon the temperature had crept up only to 4 degrees F. However there was no wind. Skate-skiing is Wright’s forte; she reports that she pushed it as hard as she could, passed many skiers (this was a pursuit race), got the 10th fastest score for the skate, and finished at 17th for the combined races. She was happy and “almost used up” at the end.
The North Shore girls hockey team fell 4-0 to Cloquet-Esko-Carlton in the quarterfinals of the Section 7A playoffs last Tuesday night in Cloquet. The No. 6 seeded Storm ended their season with a 7-19 record. Cloquet moves on to face No. 4 seed Moose Lake Area in the section semifinals Saturday, Feb. 12 in Virginia.

The Silver Bay Mariner basketball girls picked up a couple wins last week, traveling to the Twin Cities where they played PACT charter school and Recording Arts High School. The Mariners finished the week with a Tuesday night game against Duluth Denfeld.
The North Shore Nordic Ski team finished its regular season with a blustery meet at Giants Ridge on Wednesday Feb. 9. Conditions this year have been colder, generally, than in recent years and this final meet was no exception. While the temperatures were warmer than usual, (in the low 20s), the wind chill made it feel like one of the coldest yet. Intermittent snow showers blew horizontally, giving the impression that the snow never landed, and wisps of snow whipped up frequently, creating temporary whiteouts for skiers in the more open areas. The beginning of the race was straight into the wind, and even the most vigorous sprinter looked like it was a struggle to pick up the pace. Before their races skiers hopped, skied, swung their arms, and tightly wrapped themselves in the pre-race cloaks. After, they cooled down quickly and were sent off the course to layer up quickly before the sweat froze.
The Varsity Ski team headed to Ely on Tuesday, February 8, for a meet that was rescheduled to avoid frigid temperatures two days later. Even so, it was hardly a balmy gathering, with strong winds blowing near white-out conditions on the big hills and temperatures dropping throughout the day. Unable to reserve a bus and driver at the last minute, the coaches rallied to reserve a van and drive a personal truck with gear in the back to get the Varsity to Ely where they joined up with Cook County skiers to make up the North Shore Nordic team. Unfortunately, the junior high and JV skiers were unable to attend from Two Harbors.
It was 41 below in Brimson last week and that was a highlight for the thousands of Lake County residents on the celebratory march for the first editions of the Camp Shack News-Gazette-Chronicle-Post-Press-Weekly Standard. The newspaper-mad throng had gotten through the night in the balmy neighborhoods of Duluth, urging residents to take up the flag and start newspapers in all corners of the city.
