HIGHLAND By all accounts the week for the Minnesota WILD was a continuation of poor play and a standings setback to be sure. On a one-week Canadian road trip the team went 1-3 with its lone victory in the first game of the trip. The team beat the EDM Oilers by a 7-3 score. That would be the high point of the week though. They traveled to Ottawa and were defeated by the Senators in a 4-3 loss. They played the TOR Maple Leafs last Thursday and lost 3-1 in what may have been the best game of the trip. This game was 2-1 until TOR got an ENG with 42 seconds left on the clock for the 3-1 final. I felt that the WILD played quite well overall and the outcome could have gone either way.

The Two Harbors girls hoopsters squared off against two top section seeds in game action last week and took two tough losses in the process. “We had two tough games,” said coach Dan Lillegaard.

The Silver Bay girls hoop team lost to McGregor 57-52 at home last Friday. Coach John Sandstrom gave credit to the girls, saying they kept the game close all the way only to fall in the final seconds.
Olya Wright, the lone qualifier for the state meet from the North Shore team, reports that the first day of the meet, in which her classic race was held, was “windy and warmer” than usual. She placed 24th and felt a little disappointed and like it was “not my best.” The second day of the meet they woke up to -17 degrees F and by the time she raced in the afternoon the temperature had crept up only to 4 degrees F. However there was no wind. Skate-skiing is Wright’s forte; she reports that she pushed it as hard as she could, passed many skiers (this was a pursuit race), got the 10th fastest score for the skate, and finished at 17th for the combined races. She was happy and “almost used up” at the end.
The North Shore girls hockey team fell 4-0 to Cloquet-Esko-Carlton in the quarterfinals of the Section 7A playoffs last Tuesday night in Cloquet. The No. 6 seeded Storm ended their season with a 7-19 record. Cloquet moves on to face No. 4 seed Moose Lake Area in the section semifinals Saturday, Feb. 12 in Virginia.
