This season marks the end of a deeply impactful coaching career for Dan Hebl, Two Harbors School Counselor and Cross Country and Distance Track coach. At the Track and Field team banquet last week, the four distance track seniors who will be the captains next year spoke special words of good-bye to this extraordinary coach. Here are excerpts of their speeches.
Editor’s note: We put a hold on the Great March for Community Newspapers due to the following election. The Exalted Shack Master must be in attendance and we couldn’t resume the march until he was sworn in.
Guns and Gun Insanity. I grew up with guns, and have very few friends or family members who don’t own one or many.
In the preliminaries for the State Track and Field meet, Two Harbors runners finished as follows: the girls 4X400 meter relay (Jenna Marxhausen, Lamar Gordon, Grace Swanson, Trinity Giddings) took 10th place. Giddings took 12th place in the 400, Delaney Nelson took 12th in the 100, Tanja Thomas took 16th in the 200, and Autumn Smith took 14th in the 3200. Senior Ethan Moss took 15th in the Shot Put and 14th in the Discus.
Two Harbors golf coach Mike Fitzpatrick said he had a full team for the first time in years and saw his golfers up their game over the season. “We had six varsity boys and got to a few meets after a cold, wet start,” said Fitzpatrick.
The weather made up for the past with a beautiful day in the 60s at the University of Minnesota-Duluth stadium where the final Sections track and field meet of the season was held on June 2. Both the Mariners and the Agates performed decisively well, resulting in ten athletes from Two Harbors and two from Silver Bay moving on to the state meet in Cambridge, Minnesota on June 10.
The Silver Bay softball squad opened the double-elimination Section 7A tourney May 26 with a tight 8-7 win over Northwoods. The Mariners jumped out to a 4-0 lead only to have Northwoods come back to tie it up in the fifth inning. The two teams were scoreless until the top of the seventh when the Mariners pushed four runs across the plate.
The Two Harbors diamond squad jumped out to a six-run lead in the sixth inning of their final season game in Ely and held on for a 7-5 victory on Thursday, May 26. The Agates earned the victory despite allowing Ely to score three runs in the seventh inning.
Editor’s note: We last left the Great March for Community Newspapers ready to be turned back north by the parachute jump of Tony and the reluctant editor. The march will be led by Hell Yes! and the Camp Shack Marching Band. Here is a brief look at the preparations for the marching band season.
