From the Outside

Gordon Hommes Deliberate Living I was thinking recently about how we spend our time and how it has changed over the generations. It wasn’t that long ago when life was far less convenient, and when much of what had to be done you had to do yourself, often because of financial necessity, but also because of societal norms.

Forrest Johnson Editor's note: Please stand by as we interrupt Stream of Consciousness #1768 with the following important message. The Department of Mental Duress was holding its monthly meeting at Camp Shack, and it was hard for those of us not in the rank and file to overhear their dire warnings.

Two Harbors Area Food Shelf receives grant from Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless

Two Harbors, Minnesota – July 28, 2022 – At a time when individuals and households throughout Minnesota are experiencing hardships in numbers never seen before, Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless (OYH) Foundation is working hard to ensure their funding reaches those in need in every corner of the state. In their most recent summer funding cycle, Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless has granted Two Harbors Area Food Shelf with $2,649 to improve their “shopping model” of food distribution for the community they serve. Two Harbors Area Food Shelf has been serving the area in Lake County since 1982. THAFS serves an average of 145 households per month, providing 80 pounds of food for a family of three. Funding from Open Your Heart will provide Two Harbors Area Food Shelf with the purchase of a glass door freezer to allow for easy ‘client choice’. This piece of equipment will allow Two Harbors to fully embrace the ‘client choice’ model of distribution and will improve their overall ability to meet the needs of the community by allowing them to best offer frozen items that are often the most desired by shoppers.

Bike MS Returns to Lakeview Park

When does a quiet playground and picnicking area become a sea of tents, live music, and high spirits? Bike MS (Multiple Sclerosis), the largest fundraising cycling series in the world, sends nearly 75,000 cyclists and more than 6,000 teams out to ride together each year to change the world for people with MS. As in past years, the “Ride Across Minnesota 2022” included an overnight stay in Two Harbors on the evening of July 22. Riders number 325 biked in from the north and popped up their tents all over Lakeview park. Kathleen O’Donnell, Upper Midwest Chapter President of the National MS Society, says that many of the cyclists come year after year, including families that use this ride as a family reunion. Coming from as far away as Texas, each rider or team raises pledges for MS for each mile biked. In this case the ride was five days and 291 miles long, began and ended in Proctor, and took a spin up through Chisholm and Biwabik before descending to Lake Superior. The mission of the NMSS? To cure MS while empowering people affected by MS to live their best lives.
