Cheer Lego Robotics team at State 3…2…1…LEGO!!!

The Two Harbors High School Robo Dweebs #5501 are heading to the Boston Scientific State Championship in St. Paul On Sunday, February 12th. The team has been working extra hard since their Regional competition in December. As a team they have logged almost 60 hours of practice time, conducted four different experiments for their Innovation Project, added four new robot missions of coding and building to their Robot Game and Design presentation, and created fun, learning spaces of outreach as part of their Core Values. Team members say that they are excited about going to state, with one Robo Dweeb saying, “State is important to me and the team because we have worked so hard to get to this level and we think our dedication is worthy of the sate competition.” The Robo Dweebs have gone international by working with the teams: The Flock from Quebec, Canada and F no Shiro from Japan. Sharing our projects, presentations, and robot with teams from other countries has broadened our perspectives and has shown us how hard the English language can be to express ourselves without using local vernacular or sayings. The team also hosted a scrimmage with a Duluth team that is also heading to State!

Basketball Report

Saturday Jan 28th: Two Harbors 79 International Falls 40 The Agates survived a sluggish start to pick up the road win at the Broncos. I thought the group of freshmen Jace Gomez, sophomores Tate Nelson & Jace Ruberg along with juniors Trevor Kleive & Thor Tokvam provided a much needed spark finishing the 1st half on a 20-5 run to provide a 43-22 cushion at the half. Trent Gomez led all scorers with 15 points followed by Jace Gomez with 13. In all, 13 Agates were in the scoring column. Tuesday Jan 31st: Two Harbors 70 Cromwell 35 A fantastic defensive clinic was put on by the Agates in limiting the Cardinals chances all night. On the offensive side of things, great balance with Ethan Bopp & Trent Gomez netting 15 points each, followed by Isaiah Hietala with 13. Again, 13 Agates found the basket on the night.

Coldest Meet of the Year for North Shore Nordic

The Ely Nordic Team hosted its annual meet at Hidden Valley Ski Area a day early due to the cold temperatures forecast for Saturday, January 28. Even so it was a cold blustery day with snow showers on Friday, January 27, when eight teams converged to race classic (in the tracks), sprints, and a freestyle (skate) pursuit race. Several key skiers from the Nordic team were unable to attend because of the rescheduled date, but some JV skiers moved up to varsity and performed admirably. The temperatures hovered in the teens with a blistering wind making it feel much colder in the open areas. The skiers were entirely undeterred by the chill and most competed in the traditional dance-off that follows the competition at Hidden Valley. Cook County skiers represented the Storm in a dance that included a couple skiers, some flags and other props, and a clear but undecipherable theme. Duluth East, predictably, had the highest number of dancers, with over 40 of them out there doing their moves to music. Marshall School’s dance included a twisted trust-fall for one skier! It was a long and full day, ending with a long ride home for most teams, illustrating the commitment to both skiing and fun that characterizes this ski section. Race placement is as follows: Varsity Boys Placement: Eli Smith (30th classic, 24th freestyle, 23rd overall), Everett Hurth (35th classic, 36th freestyle, 33rd overall), Ben Wermter (27th classic, 44th freestyle, 39th overall), Ethan Fish (53rd classic, 48th freestyle, 48th overall), Keean Seelin (58th classic, 54th freestyle, 56th overall) Varsity Girls Placement: Olya Wright (8th classic, 8th freestyle, 8th overall) , Lamar Gordon (34th classic 33rd freestyle, 34th overall), Emma Crook (35th classic, 34th freestyle, 35th overall), Quincy Hurth (26th classic, 39th freestyle, 36th overall), Martine Redshaw (41st classic, 50th freestyle, 46th overall).
