The local Renegade Riders Saddle Club hosted The Two Harbors Play Day on Saturday June 5th. The Tom Gow arena at the Lake County Fairgrounds smelled sweetly of horses and summer. It began with the American flag and delivered good clean fun for young and old.

Nature Nurtures

There are invasive plants, insects, aquatic and terrestrial dwellers. Parasites and even diseases are categorized as invasive. This is a subject I struggle with because I believe we are meant to move, travel, and spread out. Evolution developed an enormous tool belt of ways to move lifeforms about our planet. From the weightlessness of a dandelion seed drifting in the wind, to the laxative effect in European buckthorn berries, we are up against true forces of nature.

The sun can be dangerous year-round, but for a large portion of the time we are bundled up against the cold, and so we automatically protect ourselves against harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Katya’s Corner

Last Wednesday, our crew of six sailed from Silver Bay to Two Harbors. A “nor’easter” built all afternoon, but we were “running with it,” as they say in nautical terms, moving with the waves and wind rather than against them. So, the ride was relatively smooth. If you never looked behind you, you’d never guess how big the waves were. We have a seasoned crew now, and it was a thrill for me to watch them take over at the helm, peer ahead with purpose, and start decisively spinning the wheel.

Bean and Bear Reroute Project Seeks Volunteers

The Superior Hiking Trail’s Bean and Bear Lakes overlook, one of the most popular hikes on the Northshore, needs the community’s help. The Superior Hiking Trail Association will be rerouting this section of trail to higher and drier ground to protect this beautiful hike and make this stretch of trail more sustainable and hiker friendly. We are in need of 150 volunteers during the two-week project that runs from June 15-26 near Silver Bay, Minn.

County Road 3 (CSAH 3) Closure

(Town of Silver Creek, MN) County Road 3 (CSAH 3) remains closed between Fors Road (County Road 301) and Gun Club Road (CSAH 24) until the culvert over the E. Branch of Silver Creek can be replaced. Work is expected to begin on July 27, 2022. A detour along Fors Road and Gun Club Road has been posted.

Bites from the Bays

The 2022 Green Door Smelt Fry was a tremendous success! Over 400 hungry attendees ate 225+ pounds of fried smelt! Thank you to everyone who came out to enjoy this event. This couldn’t have been possible without the help of our incredible team of volunteers. A huge thanks to Sherry, Cindy, Leah, Jens, Jeff, Travis, Kaylee, Haley, Debbie, Tim, Chuck, Mike, Henry, Anna, Bob, Donna, Jason, Jesse, Jim, Jimbo, Leif, and a hats off to Clayton for hosting the whole shebang at the Green Door! You can count on the Green Door Smelt Fry to continue in2023 about when the smelt run up the rivers in Late April or Early May. Until then, I hear you can get a mean fish fry at Northwoods Family Grille in Silver Bay or Four Seasons in Finland.
