Katya’s Corner

Around the Solstice, I always find myself in awe of the physical and mental endurance of all who lived here before electric light and central heating made it so cushy. This year I’ve been thinking of the Anishinaabe, or Ojibwe, people, who migrated from the north and east and settled when they found “food that grows out of the water.” Yes, the wild rice. If you have read “Wild Rice, a History” in this week’s Press you know that wild rice is a plant that is in danger of disappearing. The sulfate-turned-sulfide chemical process that occurs downstream of discharging plants is one cause of decline.

The Reluctant Editor

Reluctant Editor’s note: I missed the deadline for last week’s issue and the opportunity to offer my annual lutefisk column. Please note that lutefisk is still in fashion in some households this week. I know one fellow in Two Harbors that has eaten lutefisk every day since Thanksgiving and he said he won’t stop now.

New Year means new beginnings, and gratitude

I am sure New Year’s Resolutions are swarming around you. It is that time of year when we look back at the previous year- the good, the bad, and the unsure. We look ahead to the new year, a clean slate, with anticipation of all the new possibilities life could bring. Yet, many of us have the new gusto for a few days, weeks, or some even months to this new resolution. Resolution according to the Oxford Dictionary means: a firm decision to do or not to do something.

From a Pastor’s Heart

Traveling in Perilous Conditions into 2023 As all of us are aware, this winter season has been truly wintry, including a major winter storm mid-month, followed by bitterly cold weather leading into Christmas. On the upside, we have been provided with some breath taking sights--with snow laden trees sculpted into fantastical creatures and all the world looking white, bright, and beautiful.

Fluffy the butterfly sits on a windowsill in our sun room, anxious to hibernate for the winter. A well-known local, whose opinion I trust, asked what kind of butterfly it was. By all markings, according to naturalist Larry Weber’s “Butterflies of the North Woods” it appears to be a Compton Tortoiseshell. The well-known local said, “It’s got to be outside, it has fat that will keep it through winter.” When Fluffy was discovered in the sun room, winter was here already. We’re assuming it was on a plant brought in from the deck in late fall. It gravitated to the window and would flutter about trying to find a way through a pane of glass after figuring it was time to hibernate. But we caring humans said, no Fluffy, we’ll provide you with slices of apple and put you on the moist soil of our little sequoia to lap up moisture and nutrients. According to Weber, dung is also utilized and since there are three horses nearby, we could certainly bring in a horse apple or two, but we have chosen not to.

If you read the article about recycling in Lake County this week, and the article a few weeks ago about the Inflation Reduction Act, you may be feeling, like I do, that this kind of synergy has not risen to the surface for a long time. What do recycling and electrification have in common? Together they show us how to realize a whole new way of living of which we could barely conceive just a decade ago.
