Finland area organizations awarded grants for child-care and out-of-school time programs

Northland Foundation awards grants July through September 2022 During the 3rd quarter of 2022, the Northland Foundation awarded 30 grants totaling $796,000 to support people and communities for a thriving region. Seven grants were made in partnership with State of Minnesota funding to expand child care in the region, with $95,000 in total going to child care entities in Cloquet, Duluth, Ely, Finland, and Grand Marais.

November is an opportunity to honor the Indigenous people who first called Lake County and the north shore home. Their ancestors fished in the bay’s of the Big Lake by torchlight, trapped, hunted, gathered manoomin and traveled to sugar bush where we now value our wilderness experiences.

Upcycled Weaving Over the past few months, dozens of community members of all ages contributed to the creation of a colorful community art piece at the Silver Bay Public Library. This project, called “Upcycled Weaving,” repurposed castoff materials into a fun, interactive, collaborative creation.

Teaching kids about giving

On the quest to raising good humans, I realize that most people tend to use the holidays as a teachable time for kids. We encourage the need to do good for others who might have less than we do as we donate food, toys, money and help in our communities and beyond. We do this on overdrive in November and December because these months are within the “season of giving.” And while I wish this was more of a year-round notion; I still jump on board with my own three kids to embrace the season as a time to do for others with no expectation of gain. Many of the best ways to help others costs nothing at all, aside from some time and effort.
