Lake Superior School District #381 recognizes service of board member Burns

Long-time board member Tom Burns was recognized for his many years of service to the Lake Superior School District board at their regular meeting on Tuesday this week. Superintendent Jay Belcastro stated that he remembered with appreciation Burns’ advocacy for students going back to when Belcastro was the assistant principal at Two Harbors High School (THHS), and thanked Burns for his 12 years of service to the school district.

From the Outside

The last day of the firearms deer season dawned with an air temperature of -1 F at my house. I didn’t go out, not because of the cold, but because the woods have been very quiet this fall in terms of deer activity, the few deer showing up on game cams typically consisting of a doe and her two fawns. There was a big bruiser buck caught on the cameras twice near the end of the season, both times between midnight and 2:00 AM, but the odds of encountering him seemed low enough to discourage motivation. Besides, I had already spent plenty of time in my stand or still-hunting over a lot of terrain.

Runoff Report

Deer season had finally ended, and the Great March for Community Newspapers gathered steam once again. Winter had begun to settle in on the large encampment that had occupied the four Carlton County towns of Nickerson, Duquette, Kerrick and Bruno for many months.

History of Commercial Fishing on the North Shore

100 years ago today, Johnson Brothers & Company sent out 5,000 circulars to their former customers and have the Stanley plying the North Shore and have already shipped out two carloads of herring to the Chicago Market. Ronning Brothers have a tug plying the North Shore and Lake Shore Transportation Company, organized by Egge & Rise of Beaver Bay, had begun regular trips between Beaver Bay and Two Harbors.
