Masked Fan Speaks

Did you know or remember that the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers never met in the playoffs until January 2005? It's true. The Vikes met the Pack over at Lambeau Field in an NFC Wild Card playoff tilt and came away 31-17 winners that day. Former Vikes QB Daunte Culpepper and All-Universe receiver Randy Moss had a nice outing with Daunte rushing for 54 yards, throwing for 284 yards, and four touchdowns, two of which were directed to Moss. The Packers Brett Farve threw four interceptions in the game. The Vikes were glad to get in an extra game that year via the playoffs, but in the next round, they were dispatched by the Philadelphia Eagles in a 27-14 loss in Philly. The two teams have played only twice in the playoffs and that stands at 1-1. The overall series including regular season and playoff games stands at 65-57-3 all-time in favor of Green Bay. The most dominant stretch of wins was when the Vikings went 15-4-1 against the Pack in the seventies. Considering the time in years and the fact that they've met 125 times in official NFL tilts, the record and thus the rivalry have been fairly close. This afternoon was not one of those games though. The Pack dismantled the Vikes in a 41-17 schoolyard paddlin' that can't be overstated. The score is misleading due to two late scores by the Vikes. With nine and a half minutes left it was 41-3. It was an embarrassing defeat. You went to the turf of a very big rival and got it handed to you. And this close to the end of the season and the playoffs is when you want to be getting on that playoff runway and start building toward takeoff. Today's loss did nothing to get that rolling. Right now, judging from today's game, the team looked tired and beat up. CBS Commentator Tony Romo kept talking about the impending playoffs and how the Purple was the only team with 12 wins that have given up 400 yards of offense to the other team in every game. He also made sure to mention the team's negative point differential.
