As I venture through several feet of snow to check each hive for sounds of buzzing, I make an estimate of how many colonies will survive until spring and multiply into two. This is the natural regeneration of honeybee colonies, and the beekeeper's job is to split them before they split themselves, come spring. There is a learning curve to understanding and accomplishing this, on top of many challenges in between. Still with plenty of harsh weather and other “out of my control” circumstances to muster through before knowing which colonies will survive and thrive, I make a guess. It often feels like playing roulette, but the longer you interact with bees the more you begin to understand what a “strong colony” truly means.
