Natural Surprises “With the northern lights a runnin’ wild in the land of the midnight sun…” Johnny Horton, “North to Alaska” Well, it wasn’t exactly the land of the midnight sun, but it was around midnight a couple of nights ago when I ventured outside and saw a fabulous display of northern lights, the second in a month, and even better than the first one. For some reason, whenever I see northern lights over a frozen landscape—and the landscape surrounding my home remains mostly frozen and blanketed with snow—I think of that old Johnny Horton song, North to Alaska, which I grew up listening to on my parents vinyl.
The miles of waterfront winding around much of Two Harbors are undeniably one of the city’s most outstanding features. Now a group of citizens is organizing to bring forth a comprehensive design and use plan with renewed energy. Over the years a variety of plans have been explored, and by and large they have not gained traction. A recent proposal for townhomes on Lighthouse Point, and the likelihood that 30-plus acres at Agate Bay under MnDNR ownership will soon be conveyed to city ownership have cast a new light on the waterfront. Jolene Brink, Two Harbors, says that she and a group of others from the area have created a citizen group in order to apply for funding that could help move waterfront projects forward. The group is currently working on a grant application through the Citizens’ Institute on Rural Design (CIRD), due by May 1st.

Sometimes I'm a bit nervous about interrupting people whole they are working to ask if they would do me the favor of being a random stranger for The Lake County Press. I was glad I drummed up my courage and approached Stephanie Ouren.
Lake County seeks survey input from homeowners with aging septic systems in order to attain funds to help with necessary upgrades. Four years of inspection data suggests that up to 70% of septic systems in some areas of Lake County may be failing, which could result in contaminated water or compromised health of people, wildlife, and plant life.
