Mental Health Awareness May is Mental Health Awareness Month which began in 1949 and was started by Mental Health America (MHA). Nearly 1 in 5 American adults will have a diagnosable mental health condition in any given year and 46 percent of Americans will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition sometime in their life according to MHA.

County Planning commission recommends 4% cap on short-term rentals

At a public hearing during a Lake County planning commission meeting last week the gamut of support for no restrictions on short term rentals (STRs, also known as vacation rentals) in greater Lake County, to far more restrictive measures on STRs were expressed. Following the public hearing the Planning commission discussed their options at length, considering putting off making a recommendation until they were able to gather more information on several items raised, including, density/ spacing, transfer/ownership changes, exempt commercial zoning districts, and a process to adjust cap limits as new housing units are added throughout the county.

Highway 61 Silver Creek and Stewart River work to resume in May

Construction on Highway 61 at the Silver Creek bridge north of Two Harbors will resume on May 1. Minnesota Department of Transportation contractors will complete the realignment of Highway 61, realign Silver Cliff Road, and complete stream restoration. Traffic will remain on the existing temporary bypass until construction is complete in late September 2023. Construction on Highway 61 at Stewart River will resume on May 15. The historic bridge will be rehabilitated, and the existing highway will be reconstructed into parallel bridge alignment. Traffic will remain on the existing temporary bypass until construction is complete in late September 2023. Kelsey Beach parking lot will remain closed through construction.

The Two Harbors softball season finally got underway with games against state powers Moose Lake-Willow River and Esko along with a close 14-12 loss to Cromwell. “We can’t match up with some of those teams, we’re just too young,” said coach John Sandstrom. “It’s fun to see the looks on their faces when they make a play. They try so hard.”

Natural Surprises “With the northern lights a runnin’ wild in the land of the midnight sun…” Johnny Horton, “North to Alaska” Well, it wasn’t exactly the land of the midnight sun, but it was around midnight a couple of nights ago when I ventured outside and saw a fabulous display of northern lights, the second in a month, and even better than the first one. For some reason, whenever I see northern lights over a frozen landscape—and the landscape surrounding my home remains mostly frozen and blanketed with snow—I think of that old Johnny Horton song, North to Alaska, which I grew up listening to on my parents vinyl.
