Part 2 “The Indigenous presence in Knife River”, a continuation by Todd Lindahl from last week. During the early Paleo-Indigenous time northeastern Minnesota would have been arctic tundra with black spruce, dwarf birch, brushes, and sedges.
Gordon Hommes Utilizing and Reversing Lower Standards It’s May first as I write this piece, and there is still nearly a foot of snow on the ground at my house, with as much as eighteen inches in the woods. Emerging from the melting snowpack are the charred stumps of cedar trees and moldering remains of white pine stumps, left in the wake of logging operations 120 years ago.
Remember when MLB spring training was in Arkansas? Just last week I was watching some afternoon horse racing. It's something I do frequently as I have been a fan of the ponies since I was a young boy.
Two round wooden buildings have sprung up shore side near Beaver Bay. Home to a new business, these “wooden yurts” will house classes and lodging for visitors. Owner of The School of Yoga and Nature Arts, Teresa Hershey is opening what she dubs Beaver Bay’s first Folk School. Hershey lives primarily in Chaska, and since 2018 has been staying in Beaver Bay many weekends of the year. “I’m so excited to be up in the neighborhood, I love Beaver Bay and the north shore!” enthused Hershey. Certified as a forest therapy guide and yoga instructor, Hershey says that learning both of those crafts have been life changing experiences.
Editor’s note: The reluctant editor has extended his stay in Lake County a bit longer so he can show you some of his favorite places and characters. He will be returning to the Great March for Community Newspapers soon. Continuing with my effort to tell you about some little known but wonderfully inviting stops along the North Shore and the hinterlands of Lake County, I’m pleased to help you plan your vacation or forced exile.
It’s extra official: Rocky Taconite belongs to everyone! The beloved mascot of Silver Bay was discussed at Monday’s Silver Bay city council meeting with a letter from the Bay Area Historical Society to the effect that Rocky’s image is public domain and not under any copyright restrictions. In the vein of “good to know” there was no official action needed or taken by the council, however, those present seemed to enjoy reflecting on the cute representative of the city.
The Forest Service Eastern Region completed its review of the information and concerns provided by the counties regarding the initial results of the second appraisal. The information and documents associated with this review, as well as the first appraisal and the second appraisal, have been transmitted to the Forest Service’s Chief Appraiser in Washington D.C. for final review. The Chief Appraiser will reconcile both sets of appraisals and make a recommendation to the Secretary of Agriculture on the “fair appraised value” to be used as the basis for payments to the State.”

At a public hearing during a Lake County planning commission meeting last week the gamut of support for no restrictions on short term rentals (STRs, also known as vacation rentals) in greater Lake County, to far more restrictive measures on STRs were expressed. Following the public hearing the Planning commission discussed their options at length, considering putting off making a recommendation until they were able to gather more information on several items raised, including, density/ spacing, transfer/ownership changes, exempt commercial zoning districts, and a process to adjust cap limits as new housing units are added throughout the county.
