Susan Detweiller, former member of the Brimson fire department, knew to take steps to protect her property from wildfire. A program with the Natural Resources Conservation Services allowed for the removal of spruce and balsam to mitigate fire potential from spruce budworm damage. On Detweiller’s property, healthy trees were thinned to at least 10’ apart. That was done in 2019 on 18 acres of property.

Two Harbors community concerned about Hwy 61 construction impacts
About 60 people attended a meeting with the Minnesota Department of Transportation in Two Harbors on June 4. Another session targeted for neighbors along the proposed detour route that same day brought in about 25 people. Attendees voiced two main concerns, roundabouts and detour route location.

Wildland fires in Brimson largely contained
Between May 11 and May 25 over 30,000 acres of wildland burned in the Brimson Complex fires, much of the perimeter contained as of the 25th. Fire experts warn that while green-up and some cooler, rainy days have been helpful, containment does not mean the fires are out, a process which can take weeks, or even months.
