Filings for vacant District 1 commissioner seat closed

For the seat left vacant by the unexpected death of Lake County commissioner Pete Walsh the filing date has passed on May 31. Six individuals have officially filed for election to fill that vacancy, including; Colby Abazs, Joe Baltich, Paul B Hartshorn, Steven Marolt, Mark Haarman, and Jack Nelson. A special primary election will be held in the First District on August 8th. A follow up special general election will be on November 7, 2023.

Volunteers needed in Cook and Lake counties for DNR loon survey

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is seeking volunteers to help monitor the loon population in Cook and Lake counties. Volunteers are needed for a minimum of one morning during the June 30 through July 10 monitoring period, to count the number of adult and juvenile loons on pre-selected lakes. For more than 20 years, with the assistance of hundreds of volunteer observers, the DNR has gathered information about common loon numbers on more than 600 lakes distributed among six regions, or 'index areas,” throughout the state.
