LSSD #381 reaches mediation agreement with teachers

After almost 14 hours of mediation meeting time on Tuesday, March 12th the Lake Superior School District (LSSD) reached a tentative agreement with the teacher’s union. The agreement came after many hours of negotiation, and as of press time March 13th, had yet to be ratified by a vote of the teachers represented by the union.LSSD superintendent Jay Belcastro told the Press that there was a great deal of back and forth and he wanted to extend his appreciation to board members, teacher union representatives and the Minnesota Bureau of Mediation Services. While details of the tentative agreement were not able to be discussed prior to a teachers’ vote, Belcastro indicated that both parties had made concessions.Teachers had been asking for an increase in pay that the district said could not be supported by their existing budget.“I’m excited to have this behind us so we can focus on our number one priority of students and learning and turn back to the classroom to make sure our students are as successful as possible,” stated Belcastro.
