The North Shore PeeWees have teamed up to benefit the animals at Lake County Humane Society. Andrew Lubovich, head coach, says that he is proud of the way the team rallied to get needed supplies for the local animal shelter as they start the new year.
Covid-19 cases in Lake County have been ramping up over the last week, and as of Tuesday, January 25th there were 119 new reported cases in the last week, a more than doubling of 61 cases the week before. An all-time high for number of new cases in one week, the previous high during a single week was 110 cases in November, 2020.
What is a veteran? The answer might seem obvious, but even a military veteran (or Veteran) might be surprised at what I am about to share. I am a Marine Corps veteran, and I will admit I was ill-informed until I became the Lake County Veterans Service Officer.
It is the policy of the Lake County Press to withhold the identities of individuals in Lake County Law Enforcement briefs. When court proceedings are complete, the Lake County Press publishes a complete accounting of names and penalties in its Matters of Record.

Raven watching over kitchen operations from “her” chair. Raven is over 19 years old. She was a rescue adoption when she came to our home, and grew only to a petite size. She is a Manx, so has no tail, a special feature that makes children exclaim! Still spry and agile, Raven lost one of her eyes to disease a few years ago. The January 2 Isabella Christmas Bird Count, our 40 , ranked fourth on our list of coldest count days. Starting temperatures ranged from - 32° F in the lowlands on the west side of the circle to a relatively balmy - 20° at the count’s highest elevation on the east side. High temps there reached 6°, but elsewhere in the circle it struggled to get to 0°. Fortunately, it wasn’t windy and the sun shone all day.
Although the Lake County Press knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The Lake County Press shares these stories as a reminder to all to be safe and to follow the rules!
The main event of this year’s John Beargrease Sled Dog Race kicks off with the marathon start on Sunday, January 30 at 10:00 am from Billy’s Bar in Duluth. John Beargrease was part of an Anishinabe family living near Beaver Bay, and became legendary because of his mail delivery between Two Harbors and Grand Marais between 1879 and 1899.
