St Urho’s is fast approaching, there is less than 4 weeks to prepare for the Parade. This year’s theme is St. Urho fly’s the Coop! The Parade will be on Saturday, March 12th, at Noon through Finland on Hwy 1. Cleveland Cliffs, in its Quarter 4 2021 Earnings call, announced that they will be idling their mining facility in Silver Bay, along with the Peter Mitchell Mine in Babbitt. According to the statement made by Cliffs CEO Lourenco Goncalves, iron ore needs have dropped with the use of additional scrap metals, and the ability to produce DR-grade pellets at their Minorca facility.

The Lake County Board met on February 8 for its Action meeting, passing 20 measures in its consent agenda and seven measures in its resolution agenda including the recruitment of a new full-time Environmental Services manager and several temporary positions for the Highway department.
Caucuses for the Republican and Democratic parties were held in Lake County last Monday, February 7, in conjunction with precinct caucuses throughout the state. Republican party chair for Lake County Tim Jezierski reported that turn out for the three locations, Silver Bay, Fall Lake, and Two Harbors, saw some of the largest numbers of participants according to their records going back to the early 2000s.
The Bay Area Historical Society, organized in 1985, is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and disseminating knowledge about the history of the Silver Bay area. We are a community supported organization, most recently by a grant from the Cleveland Cliffs Foundation to embark to create a digital archive of our historical collection.
