Lake Superior School District Applies to Continue Four-day School Week

The Lake Superior School District (LSSD) is once again broaching the issue of whether continuing a four-day school week is the best option for serving the educational needs of students in the area. The first four-day school week, with Fridays off, was approved in 2009 under the leadership of then-superintendent Bill Crandall, using the logic that four-days was a more efficient use of resources, and would save the district money in terms of transportation, and staffing costs.

Nature Nurtures

The sun’s rays are strengthening, and as I gaze out beyond the garden fences, I can’t help but think of spring. I personally feel my energy growing, and my curiosity ponders what survived our long, cold spells. Buried out there under the snow are mounds of peat moss and wood shavings hopefully insulating hundreds of tree seedlings intended to be planted in Minnesota forests. This past year I was lucky to be part of an important pilot project; The Forest Assisted Migration Project. The project centers on growing tree seedlings that are better adapted to the warmer, dryer weather patterns our region is experiencing. The seedlings are the same tree species growing in and native to northern Minnesota forests, except for one caveat; The seeds collected and grown are from a more southern Minnesota region. Ten years of previous research at UMD demonstrates these particular tree seedlings have greater success in our forests, in comparison to those from our region.

Finland News

Welcome back Finland News! Not much has changed since the last time we were here. Locals still motor to and from the Coop for supplies to finish surviving this thing called winter. Gardening catalogs are arriving in the mail for us to ogle at. The big question of seeds is most likely on our minds. Did we save enough seeds, do we need to get seeds? It’s fun to look at the catalogs and dream of warmth and new gardening plans as we drink endless cups of coffee. Locals are hitting the ice holes and trying to out fish their neighbor, all in good fun of course and never with accurate fish totals. Sliding parties are no doubt taking place since its prime time for such fun to be had. Hot cocoa and stories around the fire after a long day of cutting wood, yes, we cut wood year-round here. Upcoming events on our brains can range from Maple Sugar season to St. Urho’s!
