State of Minnesota officially returns land to Upper Sioux Community after 161 years

On March 15th, a crowd gathered in the Upper Sioux Community Multi-Purpose Building for an official ceremony marking the transfer of the Upper Sioux Agency State Park to the Upper Sioux Community (Pezihutazizi Oyate).The discussion began nearly 20 years ago when then tribal secretary Elitta Gouge, had a conversation with tribal chairman Kevin Jensvold.

Split Rock firefighting airspace intruded by drone

“When you fly, we can’t”That’s the message being put out by the Minnesota Incident Command System in direct response to a firefighting effort Tuesday afternoon, March 12th at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park.The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources helicopter was on-site dropping water on the flames and had just landed to refuel.Firefighters then spotted a drone in the airspace while the helicopter was on the ground.Fortunately, the drone was able to be confirmed as landed, allowing the helicopter to be cleared to return to base.MICS and the DNR expressed concerns that the drone’s interference could have delayed being able to get the fire out and count themselves as lucky this time.The small one-acre fire was close to historic buildings at Split Rock but was fortunately spotted quickly and rapidly extinguished before it could spread further.

Very low numbers of visitors to the northland who usually show up to ski, snowmobile, and sit by a cozy fire in a snowy landscape has caused economic hardship for outfitters, lodging, food and beverage businesses, and more.Last week Governor Walz announced that many Minnesota counties, including Lake and Cook, were eligible to apply for low-interest loans through the federal Small Business Administration (SBA) for relief.Facing an unusual winter with little snow because of low precipitation and warmer temperatures, many businesses in the area that rely on outdoor winter activities, directly and indirectly, have taken a serious hit.Facing record-high winter temperatures, Minnesota has unlocked federal funding for small businesses impacted by this winter’s historic drought conditions.

Two Harbors council looks at property sale, parking concerns

Closing its regular meeting to discuss city-owned real estate Monday evening, the agenda listed three parcels as under discussion, including two along the lakefront.With the meeting closed details of the discussion are not known, but the agenda stated “to determine the asking price to sell, and consider an offer to purchase, real property owned by the City of Two Harbors.” The parcels are Lake County Parcel Identification Nos.
