Moratorium on New Short Term Rentals Discussed by Lake County

Business at the Lake County Board meeting on March 22 began with the redistricting process. Despite the fact that they are still out of compliance in two of the five commissioner districts because those population numbers diverge more than 10% from the average, there is no way to adjust their boundaries without creating another, often bigger issue. County administrator Matt Huddleston recommended they stay the same, as re-working the districts to be more “regular and compact,” would take years of effort in partnership with townships and cities and should start at least five years before the next census. Commissioners agreed with this assessment and approved the next move forward in the process.

Silver Bay Council Makes Decisions to Move Ahead on Multi-Modal Trailhead

The council discussed development of their ongoing Multi-Modal Trailhead project at length, including a presentation by city engineer Joe Rhein from Bolton-Menk. City Administrator Lana Fralich shared information regarding work already underway in the planning process for the center, which is expected to cost around $3 million, and stated that engineering work needs to begin moving forward in order to keep the project on track.

A citizen group in Two Harbors calling themselves the Resign or Recall Committee have taken a first official step toward recall of Mayor Chris Swanson. On Monday, March 21 representatives of the group filed a Certificate of Recall with the interim city administrator, starting the pro cess of collecting signatures requesting a recall.

North Shore Tourism Starts with Roads and Cars

On this date 100 years ago, the Two Harbors Automobile Club announced an effort to connect owners of comfortable quarters with tourists during the upcoming season. While many wealthy vacationers were able to take rustic rooms with fishermen along steamship routes, lack of passenger railroad routes north of Two Harbors severely hampered organized development of the tourism industry along the North Shore.
