WILD offseason ahead! With the Minnesota WILD season coming to an immediate conclusion recently, all post-playoff talk about the club centered around some looming personnel decisions hanging above GM Bill Guerin’s head. And rightfully so.
At the end of an eventful city council meeting in Two Harbors Monday evening the council voted for a recall election of mayor Chris Swanson. Kicking off the meeting was a request by councilor Jackie Rennwald to move committee reports to the end of the meeting in order to accommodate her need to leave early, and so she could vote on the recall item.
Gearing up for Summer The Silver Bay Public Library has a full and engaging calendar for the month of June! This year’s summer reading program, called “Read Beyond the Beaten Path,” begins June 13 and runs for eight weeks until August 5. We have a variety of activity books and incentive prizes tailored for different age categories from ages 0-18.
In November 2021, a referendum passed in the Lake Superior School District that allocated a $44.1 million levy over the next twenty years. These monies are to be invested in the three school buildings–William Kelley School in Silver Bay, the Minnehaha Elementary in Two Harbors and the Two Harbors High School. As soon as this referendum passed, the planning began for this multi-year upgrade. To understand it fully, let’s back up a bit. Before the election in November, the School District hired ICS, a Project Management Group, to guide them through the project from start to finish. ICS helps the district know what questions to ask, what decisions to make, and how to accomplish its goals.
The Public Safety committee for the city of Two Harbors met on May 19 to review some aspects of safety planning for the pending Festival of Sail event to be held there in August. Rick Hogenson, Two Harbors Chief of Police was in attendance along with Ken Anderson, THPD officer.
The case of the praying coach An important case was argued last month before the United States Supreme Court, involving the “praying coach”. Judging from the questions asked by the nine justices, it looks like it will be another 6 to 3 decision – 6 conservative justices versus 3 liberal justices.
By May 25th, 1922 nearly 100 girls had registered with the Girl Scouts and roughly half of the group had passed the tenderfoot test- a national requirement to become a recognized member. The first Girl Guide troop was organized on March 12th, 1912 by Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Lowe in Savannah, Georgia. A resident of England, Lowe brought the Girl Guide model to America to emphasize inclusiveness, the outdoors, self-reliance, and service.

I want to acknowledge the upcoming holiday that most are familiar because of the long weekend rather than the true meaning and purpose. I will refrain from a lengthy rant meant to admonish anyone for not paying proper respect on this solemn day. I am referring to Memorial Day which is so much more than the unofficial start of summer.
“Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” (1 Timothy 4:12) I love these instructions for young Timothy. I can only imagine that it must have been a difficult row to hoe being a young person following in such big footsteps. Timothy was fortunate, however, as he apparently had a Godly mother and grandmother who greatly influenced him. He also had Paul’s encouragement.
