At a special meeting of the Two Harbors city council on June 20 a unanimous vote was taken requesting that Mayor Chris Swanson step down. Swanson did not attend the meeting, and in an email to council members when the special meeting was scheduled on Friday last week “to discuss and consider addressing concerns regarding Mayor Christopher Swanson”, Swanson replied in an email asking what would be discussed so that he could have his lawyer present.

125-year mark reached by Two Harbors City Band

This summer marks the 125th year that the Two Harbors City Band has been in existence, possibly the longest continuously running city band in the state. Performing at the Paul Gauche Memorial Bandshell in Thomas Owens Park on Thursday evenings during the summer, the city band is what member (first year 1964) Larry Saur says is, “Americana at its very best.” Saur started with the band when he was in about 9th grade, and remembers starting out the season with Memorial Day when the band was still a marching band.

The Two Harbors High School After Prom committee would like to thank the following businesses and individuals for their donations to the 2022 THHS After Prom. Along with this list, we also need to thank everyone who donated through our Go Fund Me page. With the donations we were able to provide food, prizes, and activities throughout the entire night. Bites Around the Bays

It’s here! It’s finally here! Farmer’s Market Season is upon us! Lake County boasts two phenomenal Farmer’s Markets - one in Two Harbors on Saturdays from 10am-1pm and another in Finland on Thursday evenings from 5-6:30pm. Expect to see farmers bring the last of their starter plants these next couple of weeks and transition to fresh greens, radishes, rhubarb, herbs, and many more late spring vegetables. The Finland Farmer’s Market will have a live cooking demo featuring a familiar face and a neat trick to turn all that extra rhubarb growing wild into a delicious and bright salsa. Both markets participate in the Market Bucks and Produce Bucks programs for SNAP/EBT benefits. That means that swiping a $10 charge to your SNAP/EBT card gets you a total of $30 to spend at the markets! Finland Farmer’s Market has a great Power of Produce program sponsored by the UofM combined with the Power of Local program which provides kids and seniors with $4 tokens to spend at the market each week. Get out there and support our local farmers and makers!

Correction:

The Lake County Press would like to acknowledge a correction to our issue numbers during the month of June. We incorrectly labeled the June 4 and June 11, 2022 issues of volume 1 as issue No. 19. June 4, 2022 was correctly issue No. 19. The June 11, 2022 issue should have been labeled No. 20. The edition on June 18 was incorrectly labeled issue No. 20 and should have been designated issue No. 21. This week’s edition on June 25, 2022 will reflect the correct sequence as issue No. 22. We would like to thank subscriber Sue Sigel for her close reading of the paper and for bringing this important matter to our attention. Thanks, Sue!

Random Strangers

I was getting a little worried because I hadn’t met any Random Strangers last week. I guess I’ve been spending all my time in our own back yard. Today though on my lunch break I met Maureen Nelson and her handsome dog Ollie. Maureen said, “It is a perfect day, we are loving it.” She feels very fortunate to have a place to come up to. They live in the Twin Cities.
