Rise and Fall “The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill.” On a friend’s recommendation, I listened to a podcast by that name. It’s about how Mark Driscoll and Mars Hill Church moved fast, broke things, broke people, expanded to 17,000 members, before ultimately collapsing almost overnight, all as a result of dysfunctional leadership.
Pies! I’ve been baking up a storm folks, Strawberry Rhubarb, Peach, I really don’t need an excuse to bake. A little secret, I also, enjoy eating them! Despite the strange growing season of cool weather, then scorchers, our apple trees are looking heavy with baby apples, the choke cherry trees look heavy with cherries, and the grape vine is loaded with grapes, our garden is coming along, with a lot of heavy care. Soon it will be canning season, that also hits at peak humidity of the summer. Can’t win ‘em all, you must process when the crop is ready. It’s nice to take a dip in the pool after to cool down if need be. Until next time…..

I met this nice couple while I was up kayaking on the Kawishiwi River with a good friend. We landed on an island to let her dog run free for a while. Rhonda Schoonmaker and Roman Shulman had been kayaking too. They are from the Chicago area and vacationing over the 4th . They said they are very glad to be in this beautiful place and that we need more places like this in the world.
The grind of the salmon season continues, everyone scratches out every minute of sleep that can be secured. As set netters, we are ruled by the tides as the waters of the Bristol Bay rush in and out of the Bering Sea to river systems that harbor the world’s largest sockeye salmon run.
A WILD week to be sure! The NHL off-season is young, but it is already shaping up to look like it will be an intriguing one. Sometimes the off-season can be boring and quiet, even though the business of hockey never stops.
Readers Advisory Have you ever gone to the library and just didn’t know what to read or watch? If so, I’d love to tell you about something called Reader’s Advisory. This is a term librarians like to use but it means helping people find what they are looking for.
Rocky Wall Productions, a newcomer to Silver Bay, is building on a foundation of mining history to bring a new opportunity for fun to town. Nelson French, resident of Silver Bay and one of the original organizers of Rocky Wall, says the goal was to “energize the area with live music for locals and visitors.” Rocky Taconite, the town’s iconic mascot, is also the emblem for Rocky Wall Productions, Having worked “in music for a long time,” says French, he sees the value in coming together outdoors with performing musicians to create a special shared experience.
