The Festival of Sail in Two Harbors last week drew thousands of visitors to the waterfront. The weather for the event ranged from the low 80s down to the 50s when an easterly breeze cooled coastal shore temperatures significantly. Friday night’s rain and thunder conveniently cleared by Saturday morning, though the clear sun and sparkling waters didn’t return until late in the day. By Sunday, a brisk northeast wind made for exciting sailing out on the open lake; both the Abbey Road, Bayfield, Wisc., and the Inland Sea, Suttons Bay, Mich., were undeterred by conditions and took attendees out on the open water in two to four foot waves. One crew member from the NaoTrinidad, Seville, Spain, when asked how he liked Lake Superior, admitted that he was constantly shivering and had underestimated how cold it could be here in August.
