County approves preliminary tax levy increase at 4%, HRA 1%

At Tuesday’s September 27 Lake County Board meeting, the preliminary levy increase was set by the board of commissioners at 4 percent. The majority of this funding will go to the revenue fund, with expected increased budgets for roads, bridges, capital needs, facilities, and equipment not covered by state and federal funds. All collective bargaining agreements expire this year so the budget for 2023 is unknown in this area. Even with the the four percent increase it is anticipated that meeting 2023 budget needs will be difficult as the Boundary Waters payments diminish. A decrease in compensation from the US Forest Service was announced in 2019. Compensation through the Thye-Blatnick Act was intended to protect the BWCAW when resorts were purchased by the government in 1948. This number is preliminary and can be adjusted (downward) in December before it is finalized.

Finding Covid-19 vaccine boosters

Now that the Federal Drug Administration has approved a new Covid-19 booster shot that can give improved protection against variants currently found in our communities, residents of Lake County are wondering when and where they can find the vaccine as our “indoor season” looms. The latest booster is bivalent, which means it targets the original Covid-19 strain and the highly contagious BA.5 omicron subvariant. The BA.5 is currently the most dominant strain of Covid-19 in the U.S. In Lake County access to the latest vaccine can be found through Lake View Hospital & Clinics, and Essentia Pharmacy at Super One Grocery store, though recent weeks have had more requests than shots available. At both facilities the Pfizer vaccine booster is the only brand being offered. The Pfizer vaccine has a wider age range approved from age 12 and older.

Kitty Mayo assumes role as editor of Lake County Press

After a successful startup of the Lake County Press, writer and driving force behind the new publication Kitty Mayo will take over as editor. When Kitty was hired last January I had already tabbed her as the future editor since I adamantly insisted that my role was temporary. Our work together began late last fall as things started to fall in place for a newspaper, as writers and contributors were willing to jump on board to make it the finest newspaper in Lake County. I thank everyone for their support and willingness to be a part of this new venture. I thank our many subscribers and advertisers for giving us the chance to create a newspaper out of nothing but the hope that we can be a voice for the communities of the county and the Brimson area. The team proved they could publish a paper when I headed north to Bristol Bay, Alaska for the sockeye salmon season in June and July. They did it without me bothering them about layouts and cutlines and proper headlines and news story details. Thank you to Kitty, Katya Gordon, Laura Lee Costley, Martha Hanson, Jessica Neel and Kristina Rafn for their daily work on the publication. I hope readers enjoyed my longwinded recollections of a very busy commercial fishing season and I look forward to contributing my weekly columns and offering help and suggestions when needed. Thanks to Jeremy Gulban and the rest of the folks at CherryRoad Media for believing this could happen. Please pass on the word that newspapering is alive and well in Lake County.

Nature Nurtures

Fall is officially upon us, and it is fall bird migration season. In the past few weeks record numbers of birds migrated through our region, picked up on local radars and by bird watchers alike. Each year birds move south from mid August through November and even a few unexpected stragglers have been recorded into December in our northern region. Last year I had the pleasure of following a local bird enthusiast’s encounter with a Rufous Hummingbird that was at her feeder until the early days of December. If you don’t know of Laura Erickson’s For the Birds radio program, her Birding Blog, or her books including 101 Ways to Help Birds, I highly recommend them. She is a wealth of knowledge in the birding community.

Drinks & Desserts on Community Partners

Drinks & Desserts, new fundraising event designed to hit all the high notes and sure to become a northshore classic annual event is being put on by Community Partners in Two Harbors. Community Partners, a nonprofit with a mission of helping elders age in place in the Two Harbors area, hatched the event idea out of a “side passion” of executive director Deb Scott. “I love making cheesecakes, for over 25 years it’s been my side passion,” says Scott, whose main passion is clearly helping elders maintain living at home. Scott, who is relatively new to her position with Community Partners, says she has always wanted to do a “cheesecake event” for every organization she’s worked for in her career.
