Who is a writer? I had always imagined myself writing a novel since I was 14 years old. I was well on my way in early 2000 when a fire destroyed my almost completed manuscript.

Timber Coffee launches in Silver Bay

“Woman-owned” is one of the first descriptions Katelyn Goutermont proudly uses to describe Silver Bay. The owner and operator of the brand-new Timber Coffee shop, Goutermont says opening the coffee shop this week is her brainchild and dreamcome- true. With a signed lease way back in 2020 for a building space in the NorShor Agency building, Goutermont was ready to dig in with renovations. However, organizing contractors and dealing with supply chain interruptions slowed her roll. “Every contractor decision was up to me, and we self-performed as much of the labor as we could,” says Goutermont, who is grateful to her father-in-law and her dad for doing custom work that makes the shop special. The Grand Opening will be on Saturday, October 15 between 8:15 am and 2:00 pm, kicked off with a ribbon-cutting just prior. Festivities will include a Town Scavenger Hunt with participants entered into a drawing, and other fun activities that will be detailed on Facebook and Instagram.

North Shore Health Responds to Community Concerns

GRAND MARAIS, MN, October 11, 2022 — North Shore Health (NSH) would like to publicly address certain conversations that have recently been circulating on local social media and radio. In August, WTIP posted to the station’s Facebook page an interview that on-air personality Joe Friedrichs conducted with Kimber Wraalstad, NSH CEO Administrator. The topic was about the staffing shortage at NSH and how the facility’s Care Center or Ambulance Service could potentially close if NSH is unable to hire sufficient staffing to maintain required service levels. While this was difficult news to deliver, NSH felt it was their duty to inform the community about the seriousness of their hiring crisis and how it could impact local families. “We knew this news would cause great concern, but imagine the outrage if we closed a critical service without providing advance notice,” said Wraalstad. “It was our hope that some of the caring and qualified people in our community would be motivated to take positive action.” There are a variety of ways in which locals can help at NSH: apply for one of the hardto- hire positions, take on a second job, work one shift per week, prompt qualified friends, family or associates to apply, or volunteer.

Timber Ghost Tours introduces a novel opportunity

In Beaver Bay Jason Barstow’s Track N Racks has defied the odds not only surviving a pandemic start-up, but doing well, and now Barstow has expanded his business ventures to include Timber Ghost Tours, also located in Beaver Bay. Timber Ghost Tours is a novel business, offering ATV and snowmobile tours along local trails, something that Barstow says is the only business of its kind in Minnesota. While others offer machine rental, Barstow saw an opportunity to add in taking guests out to show them the amazing sights of the area. A resident of Silver Bay for the last 12 years, Barstow says that he has left behind a career of construction and truck driving to be closer to home four years ago. “I was burnt out on being gone all the time, and I bought the building (Tracks N Racks) but wasn’t sure what to do with it,” said Barstow. Despite advice against opening a bar during the pandemic that is exactly what Barstow decided to do in 2020, eventually adding food service to the bar as well. Building off of his idea that he wants to be an agent for positive change for his community, Barstow says the addition of his latest business is that chance.
