Red Bird Transportation fills transit gap

Loved for its rural nature, the distance between us in the Two Harbors area can also create transportation problems that get in the way of some residents meeting their medical, mental health and social needs.Red Bird Transportation is a new company looking to bridge some of the existing gaps and provide rides to the things that people need to make their lives healthy and enriched.A subdivision of Cardinal Comfort Care Cooperative, Red Bird started with private pay rides at the end of this August.

Donations needed to move Veterans Memorial ahead

Work towards creating the Lake County Veterans Memorial is slow but steady according to Keith Larson.Hoping to have broken ground already this fall, Larson, a veteran and member of the nonprofit Lake County Veterans Memorial Association (LCVMA) says that more donations are needed to pay for starting work on the memorial.Memorial inscriptions are not only a way to make a donation, but Larson says carving the names of veterans into the memorial granite is really the focus of the project to keep their memories and sacrifices alive.Inscription space can be purchased in two different sizes, with the larger space able to have up to four names inscribed.Over three years on since the LCVMA started the project, the design has been modified slightly so that modest stages can be accomplished more readily.

Locals get creative to help Ukraine

Dave Nonnemacher has been fundraising to help people in Ukraine since the war in began in early 2022, but even more notable are the innovative projects he has conceived to bring meaningful help to Ukrainians as they struggle against Russian invasion.With ties to Two Harbors’ United Church, Nonnemacher has headed up assembling solar lights and phone chargers.All the proceeds from a pottery sale will be going to Ukraine to buy food for people in need there.Perhaps as crucial will be tourniquets to save lives of those with grave injuries.Working with a number of different churches across the country and New Horizons USA nonprofit, Nonnemacher had a spark of inspiration at Cedareo in Two Harbors where he thought to ask co-owner Dan Cruikshank if tourniquets could be made there.
