An old resort with new owners and plans for expansion on the edge of the Boundary Waters near Ely and lying within Lake County is hearing from residents about concerns related to adding docks, fractional ownership cabins and people to the area.Over 300 people brought a petition to Lake County requesting an environmental review before plans moved ahead, and close to 100 showed up for the public hearing held a few weeks ago.A mandatory EAW (environmental assessment worksheet) was determined to not be required by the county’s environmental services department, following guidelines set forth by state statute. At a meeting on Monday, August 19 the county Planning Commission discussed the petition for a discretionary EAW and decided to recommend to the board that it was not necessary. In the course of working on their preliminary plat the ownership of Silver Rapids have changed plans, reducing the number of units on the property to fall below 50, a number that would have likely triggered environmental review.
