“The Five Wounds” is the debut novel of Kirstin Valdez Quade. Masterfully written, this tale displays the best and worst of family, community, and love. Set in a fictitious town in New Mexico, the story tracks a turbulent year in the lives of the Padilla family. Amadeo Padilla is contemplating his own importance and personal redemption during Holy Week, where he is about to portray Jesus for a grand production. His teenage daughter, Angel, drops back into his life unexpectedly and seems determined to move in with him and his mother.

Well, the reluctant editor found himself in a bit of a pickle. As was reported in last week’s Camp Shack News-Gazette-Chronicle-Post-Press-Weekly Standard, the legions in the March for Community Newspapers had stalled after swallowing the little Carlton County towns of Nickerson, Duquette, Kerrick and Bruno. The reluctant editor did manage to revive the spirit of the crowd by pulling at their heartstrings to offer support to the many people who would be losing their jobs at the Northshore mine, processing plant, railroad and port.
Losing Winter. When I was a kid some 50 years ago I remember the cold. Even in those years when the snows came late, the ground was usually frozen rock hard well before the winter solstice, and a fall while roughhousing with a friend or sibling would leave you bruised. Every park had an outdoor skating rink, lit well into the evening, where it was pretty much guaranteed to have good ice all winter, most years. It rarely rained in winter, and the snowpack was dependable enough for consistent skiing. And that was in the Twin Cities.
Robotics is the sport of the mind! The Robo Dweebs #5501 from Two Harbors High School competed at the Boston Scientific FLL MN State Championship on Saturday, February 26, 2022. They represented Two Harbors very well in their robot runs, Core Values, and presentations for Robot Design and Innovative Project. Our robot got a high score of 285 points at State. While our competitive season has ended, we have many opportunities ahead to positively impact FLL locally and our community.
Shiloh, Kiki and Chance kick back for a well-earned rest, the kind of powernapping that cats are famous for. All three cats were adopted from Lake County Humane Society by volunteer, Michelle Frazer.
The North Shore Pee Wees played in Silver Bay last Saturday morning against Duluth East. We ended up winning 4-2. It was a strong, hard game. After we won, we advanced to play Cloquet Saturday night who is #1 in our District. We ended up losing, but we were down by three and came back in the 3 rd , and scored two goals within 30 seconds of each other, but we just couldn’t pull it off. Hats off to Cloquet on how well structured they are! They are a very fun, clean and fast team to play with!
