Nature Nurtures

If you’re a houseplant enthusiast, now is a great time to give them some well-deserved attention. As daylight is increasing, our houseplants are awakening from a winter slumber. They soon will begin to add new spring growth. Good maintenance often amounts to healthy houseplants and helps to reduce future pest and disease problems. Make some time to give them each a good look over to see if dust has collected on their leaves. If so, mist them or carefully wipe them down with a damp cloth. If they are size compatible, place them in a sink or shower and gently run water over them. Be sure to let them drain any excess water to avoid root rot. Removing dust buildup ensures maximum surface area on leaves to absorb sunlight, as well as keeping their leaf pores or stomata fully functioning.

Christmas windstorm lashes Northland

Wicked winds pounded Cook County for most of three straight days leading up to Christmas Day. The unrelenting ferocity caused multiple power outages, taking down trees, ripping shingles from roofs– even parts of the roof of the Market and Moose Tracks came off and vents from South of the Border Café (SOB) were torn from the roof, causing SOB to close indefinitely.
