Voters have the chance to hear directly from candidates running to represent them in Minnesota’s House next week; Wednesday June 12 in Silver Bay, and Thursday, June 13 in Two Harbors.

Once again this year the American Legion Post #109 in Two Harbors brought a solemn and thorough Memorial Day program to the region.Starting off with a performance by the Two Harbors City Band at the Two Harbors High School, with veteran Keith Larson speaking.Moving on to Agate Bay, a gun salute and ceremony releasing rose petals on the waters of Lake Superior gave tribute to military service members who had lost their lives at sea.Tribute was paid by the America Legion Honor Guard at the Silver Bay Veterans Home, then wreaths were laid at the cemetery.Afterward a picnic lunch was served to all comers courtesy of the Legion.Photos by Amy Carlson

Fifth graders throughout the area sent letters to the editor after learning about the importance of keeping our lakes and rivers healthy and free of aquatic invasive species.Ten-year-old Neveah Detlefson, a fifth grader at Minnehaha Elementary, shared her personal reasons for concern.At her family’s cabin on Bassett Lake Neveah likes to fish for sunfish, and last year she caught her first northern pike and bass.“I fish a lot and I worry about other boats visiting bringing invasive species in,” said Neveah.She said she wrote her letter to try to help people understand that there is a way to stop this from happening.“Kids can teach people things and writing letters can help people learn that more boaters should Clean-Drain-Dry,” said Neveah.
