Everyday Sophie Dog and I enjoy our hike along the Agate Bay Trail. This is one of the hidden gems of our city and the North Shore- a wide, evenly paved trail running from Burlington Bay to Agate Bay with an offshoot leg that treats one glorious views of Lake Superior shoreline. And the trail is maintained throughout the four seasons with trimming every summer and even regular snow plowing throughout the winter! But for years there has been an unsightly addition to the trail. Near the water intake facility located at Park Road and South Avenue there is a gentle hill that opens up to a wonderful view of forest and lake. During the upgrade to the water plant a large concrete box was moved right beside the trail. There did not seem to be any reason why this 'cask' would be located there. Upon inquiry I learned that the box held no purpose for the water treatment plant. Every time we passed this object, I would wonder what the heck it was doing there. Perhaps it was meant to be a planter- but no plantings ever appeared. What did appear were large bags of trash and then unsettling graffiti. With the Festival of Sail last year quickly approaching I thought civic pride would certainly remove this blight before thousands of visitors arrived for the event. But no such action was taken.
