Mariner softball squad earns their way to Section 7A title game
The Silver Bay softball squad punched their ticket to the Section 7A finals Thursday against Moose Lake-Willow River with big playoff wins over the past week. “The kids earned it with big wins in the double elimination rounds,” said coach Mike Guzzo. “Our goal was to make it to the championship game. It’s been 14 years since we won a section title.” The Mariners won their opening section game last Tuesday with a 13-2 win over Floodwood at home. Hope Ernest pitched three innings in the win and was 2-3 at the plate with 4 RBIs. Danika Thompson was 3-3 at the plate with 3 RBIs and Berkely Hoff was 2-3 from the batter’s box.
Community invited to Restorative Justice informational event
On June 5th a Restorative Justice community informational meeting will be held in Lake County from 4:00 to 5:30 pm at the Lake CountyLawEnforcement Center. Everyone is encouraged to attend to learn more about how Restorative Justice could help strengthen community, snacks and beverages will be provided.
History of Pride Month June 2023
A look at LGBTQ+ history kicks off the debut of new college intern to the Lake County Press, Sidni Hedren. Welcome, Sidni! Did you know the term “gay pride” was coined by Minnesotan gay rights activist Thom Higgins? June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month, which celebrates and commemorates Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer pride.
Remembering the Fallen Memorial Day
In Lake County on Memorial Day events around the county were held to honor and remember those military personnel whose lives were lost. Events began at the THHS with music by the Two Harbors city band and an address by Vince Sando, 1st Vice-Commander of the American Legion Post 109 with a special remembrance for Chet Bianco who recently died and was scheduled to make the address.

Spruce budworm a concern
Every year the Eastern spruce budworm kills multitudes of balsam fir and spruce in Minnesota, and the dead trees potentially become spectacular fuel for forest fires. The Forest Service points out that the “Eastern spruce budworm is a native caterpillar and is the most destructive pest of sprucefir forests in eastern North America.”
Duluth Armory Restoration Included in Capital Appropriations Bill
On May 22nd, the Minnesota Legislature approved the 2023 Capital Investment General Fund appropriations bill. Included among the numerous infrastructure projects in the bill is $4.5 million in general fund funding for a grant to the Duluth Armory Arts & Music Center to restore and redevelop the historic Duluth Armory. “We are thrilled to be included in the 2023 Capital Investment General Fund appropriations bill,” said Mark Poirier, executive director of the Armory Arts and Music Center. “This is a strong project, and we have a great partner for it in George Sherman and Sherman Associates. With the preparation that we have done, the Armory project stands out due to community and regional support, historic and cultural significance, and economic and entrepreneurial development potential.”
