THHS Pride Club Welcomes Pride Month

“The Pride Club has helped with my anxiety. It helps to be around people who are accepting [of me],” stated a student at Two Harbors High School. The THHS Pride Club is a safe space for LGBTQ+ kids and straight allies to socialize. Every Monday, Liz Smith and Celina Thies’ classroom is full of smiling faces chatting, working on homework, or sitting on beanbags playing video games. Smith mentioned how she didn’t feel right giving the club an agenda if the kids just wanted to socialize and be themselves in a space where “people aren’t judging them”. Students described Pride Club as an opportunity to see their friends and “just hang out”. “It’s a younger crowd,” Smith said, observing how she and Thies encountered many new faces in their second year as Pride Club advisors. “As [the kids] identify who they are and who they want to be, they don’t need the pride club as much.” When one student was asked to explain how they felt about their identity inside the club versus outside the club, they said: “When you’re in the hallway you feel on edge, but in a classroom [my identity] feels more normal.”

Flag retirement ceremony, public welcome

The public is invited to a formal flag retirement ceremony at the Lakeview Cemetery Veteran’s Section on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, beginning at 2:00 p.m. To most veterans or military personnel, the retirement of a tattered or faded U.S. flag is a solemn, yet celebratory business. Retiring a flag means the flag is unserviceable after symbolizing the ideals of this nation and representing the men and women who have fought and died for those ideals. The flag is often an inspiration and symbol of strength for those who go into harm’s way on behalf this nation. The flag should never be desecrated. It is a sacred symbol and we take its retirement seriously.

Despite Cold and Windy Weather, Many Agates will go on to the Sections Meet

The weather was the big story on Wednesday, May 24, where eleven teams gathered in Esko to run one of the coldest and windiest sub-section meets in memory. With temperatures in the mid-40s, a spitting rain, and a driving wind that knocked over cones and gusted up to 30 mph, runners faced physical challenges more common in early April than late May. The Agates ran determinedly, however, securing many spots in the Sections Meet which is coming up on June 1 at UMD. The top seven individuals and four relays from each event will go to Sections, which include: Delaney Nelson in the 100m dash, the 200m dash, 4 x 200m relay, and the Long Jump Jenna Marxhausen in the 200m dash, 4 x 200 relay and 4 x 400 relay Trinity Giddings in the 400m run, the 4 x 200m relay and 4 x 400m relay Grace Swanson in the 400m run, the 4 x 400m
