Cooperative Light & Power Hears Member Concerns
We want to thank all the member-owners that attended Cooperative Light & Power's recent Annual Meeting. We had a terrific turnout and were fortunate to be indoors together again. We are reviewing the comments from the meeting and are making the appropriate changes for next year. We apologize for the length of the meeting. As our member- owners requested, we will attempt to shorten the business meeting to an hour, including questions and answers, respecting our member-owners' valuable time.
Copper-nickel deposit size
I read the letter to the editor published in the February 24, 2023, edition of The Lake County Press concerning the Duluth Complex and the copper-nickel deposits located within the complex. Several years ago I attended 2 days of meetings of The Institute of Lake Superior Geology. It is mainly for professional geologists who have interests in the Lake Superior Region. I attended the meetings this year in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Amateurs, such as myself, also attended the meetings. I had the chance to talk with the Minnesota State Geologist and the Minnesota State Geologist Emeritus concerning the copper-nickel deposits located south the Missabe Iron Range several years ago. They both said that the area from just east of State Highway 1 where it meets the Kawishiwi River/Birch Lake and going west to about Virginia had the second largest reserve of copper ores in the world. We also have the third largest reserve of nickel ores. I asked someone from the State Geologist’s Office at the meetings this year. He confirmed their statements. The largest such districts are in South Africa.

Pool access troubles in Two Harbors
Dolly Wood is 80 years old and facing a knee replacement–a surgery she says might have been avoided if she had been exercising three times a week in a local pool as she has done in the past. Both the Country Inn and Suites in Two Harbors, and the Americinns in Two Harbors and Silver Bay used to offer locals the opportunity to swim or exercise in their pools for a fee. Only the Americinn in Silver Bay has re-instated the open door policy since the pandemic. TheAmericinninSilver Bay, according to manager Michael Giuliano, welcomes local participation at its pool. It’s an opportunity, he says, to give back to the community in a relationship which is strengthened by the mostly- local ownership of the franchise. Americinn’s Halloween Party and “Mall of Americinn” are other local-friendly events hosted there. “There’s not a lot to do around here, so this helps with that too,” Giuliano commented, as well as mentioning the relief from suffering that those with back and joint pain can get from swimming.
