Knife River History & Cultural Center

Reprinted with permission from the KRHCC February 2023 newsletter Welcome to Mookomaani-ziibi, MN 55609 I am quite embarrassed to say that after living in Knife River (KR) for more than fifty years I had no idea of KR’s early Indigenous history other that the name Knife River evolved from the Ojibwe word “Mookomaaniziibi” meaning “river with sharp stones”. I also did not know that as late as 1800 there was a summer Ojibwe village on Granite Point (forms the west entry to the marina), which is just a block from where Mary and I live! The Indigenous history of Knife River might have been lost had it not been for Todd Lindahl, KRHCC ace historian and archeologist, who recorded this very important part of KR history and now shares it with readers of the KRHCC newsletter.

Op/Ed Capitol Update

The 2023 legislative session is entering its final weeks as debates and votes on the House Floor have been running deep into the night. Despite the late nights and little sleep, it remains an honor to represent you, your family, and our communities in St. Paul. As always, I do my best to make sure your priorities and values are heard loud and clear as we make decisions on public policy that will impact Minnesota for generations to come. Over the last two weeks, the House of Representatives and Senate each passed the initial versions of large, hundreds page long budget and policy bills. Now, work shifts to conference committees where differences in the two legislative bodies’ bills will be worked out and agreement will be reached. The bills will then come before the House of Representatives and Senate for final approval and then to Governor Walz for his signature.

Mariner Blanck races with Elite

Sophia Blanck was invited to race in the Hamline Elite meet last Friday on the campus of Hamline University in St. Paul. The Hamline Elite meet is an 'invite only' meet based solely on athletes performances at the beginning of each season. Races 400m and under only invite the top 9 athletes in the state due to Hamlin track having 9 lanes. 800-3200m races can invite up to 12 racers, depending on where the natural time break falls. Sophia went into Friday's race as the 10th fastest 800m runner in the state, regardless of school size, with her scorching time of 2:19 that she ran at her first meet down in Rosemount. Only a small handful of other Section 7 athletes qualified this year, including Esko, Rock Ridge, GNK, and Cloquet.

Track at Moose Lake

Both Two Harbors and Silver Bay were on hand Tuesday at Moose Lake for a meet that was originally scheduled for Two Harbors. Because Athletic Director Scott Ross, in the week before the meet, could not guarantee the state of the home track on the 2nd (the infield is often wet at this time of year) participants in that meet moved to the Moose Lake Meet. It was a sunny afternoon with winds that were significant enough to affect the racers' speeds. The Two Harbors Girls team took first place and the Silver Bay Girls Team took 7th place. The Two Harbors Boys team took 9th place and the Silver Bay Boys' team took 10th place, out of thirteen teams total.
