Green Door Smelt Fry returns

The historic Green Door Smelt Fry returns to Beaver Bay on Saturday, May 20th, 2023. Featuring all-you-caneat fried smelt using the original Green Door recipe dating back to the first smelt fry hosted by the Beaver Bay Fire Department in 1958 along with a basket of tartar sauce, coleslaw, potato chips, and that classic carton of orange drink. Fried smelt will be served from 11:00am-3:00pm followed by barbecue from Baptism River Barbecue Co. through dinner. This family friendly event will include live music all day on the outdoor stage, inflatable bouncy castle and obstacle course for kids, raffles, drawings, prizes, a silent auction, and beverage samples from Knob Creek.

Lake County sets Short Term Rental public hearing

At the County Board meeting on April 11, County Administrator Matt Huddleston announced the official scheduling of an upcoming public hearing for the new language around Short Term Vacation Rentals. The proposed ordinance revisions, which are available at the Lake County website, include numerical limits for each township, the possible inclusion of requiring a lodging license from the Health Department, limits on inland-lake lakeshore rentals, exemptions in commercial zones, and a first-come-first-serve application wait list. The Lake County Website states: “The Lake County Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing on Thursday, April 27, 2023, at 6:00 PM in the Lake View Conference Center, 325 11th Avenue, Two Harbors, Minnesota, for the purpose of considering proposed amendments to Sec. 27.06 A. Vacation Rental Home requirements in Lake County Land Use Ordinance #12. Interested persons may submit written comments by 4:30 pm on Monday, April 24, 2023 via email message to Melissa.McIntyre@co.lake.mn.us or to the Lake County Environmental Services Department, 601 Third Avenue, Two Harbors, MN 55616, prior to the hearing. Adventures of the Edna G. of yore

When the Edna G was launched, she sank. Boats were launched sideways at that shipyard and this very tall boat turned turtle when she hit the river. She needed a little drying out and some touch-up, before finally sailing home. An all-steel hull was a big deal, and very uncommon for a boat this size. They did not compensate the compass, figuring it was a simple course to follow, to get home, but not so much!
