Brush Clean-up, Recreational Developments, and City Audit on tap in Silver Bay

Silver Bay City Councilors heard the city’s audit review at the City Council meeting on Monday, learning that despite decreased revenues in many areas, largely due to the idling of North Shore Mining, the city received a “clean, unmodified opinion,” the highest rating for financial responsibility. One example of this is the city’s practice of using its surplus for capital projects, minimizing its debt. The Council also unanimously passed the resolution affirming the proposal of a new local business, Full Sun Service, to provide a city-wide brush clean-up. On a designated day, homeowners can leave brush and branches on their boulevards, to be picked up by Full Sun Services free of charge. If they are interested in more services, free quotes will be offered. In other business, the City is applying for a federal grant to fully develop the new trailhead area as the center of recreational activity for the city. The hope is to include pickleball courts, an outdoor skating rink, and a gathering area with a fire ring as well as the tennis courts, ice arena, and trailheads that are already there.

Earth Day 101

Held on April 22 since 1970 Earth Day is a chance to notice environmental achievements, and learn more about what’s new in the world of protecting natural resources. There’s a lot to learn about climate change, and emerging technologies that are carbon-free, and the whole month of April seems like a good time to focus on environment-related self-education.

Runoff Report

While the Camp Shack Marching Band began to ferry instruments across the frozen Pigeon River on its way to the Tolton R. Murphy Arena to play at the Armistice Ceremony of the Intergalactic Major Junior Hockey League championship game, the reluctant editor had other plans. He had taken a slight break from all the goings on at the encampment for the Great March for Community Newspapers. He was taking a little trip to a remote area of Lake County, always looking for a place just beyond the horizon, and sent us the following account.

It's Sunday eve and I'm contemplating the week ahead for our Minnesota WILD. They are returning from a short road trip that saw them play what was most likely their best game of the season in beating the defending Stanley Cup Champion COL Avs by a 4-2 tally. Of course, this Avs group is different from the one that hoisted the Cup a mere few months back. But it is still a formidable team. The WILD played an excellent game in winning in Denver. To our dismay, they followed it up with an indifferent effort against the Vegas Golden Knights last night and lost a 4-1 decision. There is little time to dwell on it though because the club will face them again tomorrow night in St. Paul at the 'X'. Unlike the Eastern Conference where six of eight playoff positions have been attained, only three invitations have been handed out in the West and the teams that have them all reside in the Pacific division. The Central is still up for grabs and so is the Conference for that matter. With most teams having seven games or less left on their schedules, that will clear up soon. The WILD could have clinched a spot by winning at Vegas last night but did not do so. A win in tomorrow night's game will get them in. But with a few good puck bounces here and there, the club could still win the division or the Conference. Based on the team's playoff history I believe it would be beneficial for them to do so. In the past ten seasons, the team made the Stanley Cup tourney ten times. They advanced to the second round only twice, with seven first-round exits and a 'did not qualify' mixed in. My outlook on this season's chances has led me to believe that the team must win one or both to obtain a bit of playoff success. I believe they will have to win the Central to advance past the first round. I also feel that if they won the Conference they could have a road to the WC Final. A win there gets a chance at the Stanley Cup, the greatest trophy this planet has ever seen. Could that happen or am I drea

How can time stretch out like taffy and then suddenly spring back like a rubber band? Well, here we are … somehow through the winter holidays and headed into the increasing light of spring! Yes, there is plenty of winter weather yet. And I love winter. The lakes are snow and ice covered and the rivers and streams are still closed for the most part. I have heard the ground is not that frozen this year having been buried under the 2 feet or more of snow from December. Some of the downed trees from our stormy December came up root ball and all, testifying to just that fact. Our winter birds continue to entertain and the unwelcome rain of last week morphs into the ice that will tease us until the real spring comes. But the sun rises closer to true east each morning and climbs higher in the sky each day. It offers a warmth even in the face of cold temperatures, it’s power not to be denied. Soak it in. It will only get better!

Don’t Treat Soil Like Dirt

Meet Tara Solem, the District Manager for Lake County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) and the Water Planner for Lake County. How and when did you become interested in conservation? I grew up exploring and spending a lot of time outside on my parent’s and grandparents’ properties in northeastern Minnesota.
