AUGUST 20, 2022 100 YEARS AGO: v Superintendent Thomas Owens has announced that a special train will be run on Saturday afternoon leaving Duluth at 5:15 to accommodate those who wish to attend the matinee of the Shrine Circus at the Armory. The matinee will conclude about 4:45 and this will give ample time for those who wish to return to reach Endion station for this train.

The Friends of Tettegouche State Park are excited to bring Winter Fest back to Tettegouche State Park for the first time since the pandemic hit in 2020. Winter Fest 2023 is a day to celebrate winter with outdoor and indoor activities for the whole family and features Tettegouche Naturalist Kurt Mead, USFS Naturalist Steve Robertsen and Musician, Noah Shea.

Lucky to have local news outlets In a sobering report from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, more than 2,500 newspapers have closed since 2005. According to the report, that has left at least 70 million Americans in what is now being called a “news desert.” With two publications here in Lake County and along the North Shore, plus the Cook County Herald in Grand Marais, the Ely Echo, Babbitt News and the Timberjay up along the border, I’d say we’re pretty lucky, all told, in the news department.

How do Storm skiers stay safe with -20 wind chills?

February 2nd’s temperatures and wind chill had many wondering if the ski meet in Duluth would be canceled, but with the Sections Meet pending, it went forward as scheduled. Skiers, as always, cheerfully maintained their core temperatures by resting in heated areas when possible (buses and tents), moving constantly when outside, keeping layers on until the last second, using hand and foot warmers, and putting tape on their cheeks and noses. Without this there surely would have been some serious frostbite as the temperatures dropped and the wind picked up throughout the afternoon under a crystal clear blue sky. Coaches earned their keep on this day, keeping close tabs on skiers before and after races, cheering, taping, covering, reminding them to drink and eat, and being out in the cold themselves for the larger part of the day.
