Chemical researchers discover catalyst to make renewable paints, coatings and diapers

A team led by University of Minnesota researchers has invented a groundbreaking new catalyst technology that converts renewable materials like trees and corn to the key chemicals, acrylic acid and acrylates used in paints, coatings and superabsorbent polymers. From the Outside

Tracks and Traces As I’m traveling across the landscape in winter on skis or snowshoes, it’s impossible not to notice the variety of tracks left in the snow by a wide variety of critters. Same thing if I’m driving along some backroad and see tracks along the shoulder or crossing from one side to the other.

It's that time of year again friends! It is mid-February. Check. Our Minnesota WILD has 30 games left. Check. The WILD is drifting in and out of the playoff picture. Triple check. And outside of last year's second-place Central Division finish for the WILD, this club has seen this picture several times before. You know how it goes. The short of the long from here forward is that the team has to play at a frenetic pace just to get in as a 3rd place team or Wild Card entrant. They don't obtain home ice for the playoffs. They expend a lot of physical and emotional energy just to get into the dance and do not have the proper amount of hockey mojo left with which to do anything once they are there. This explains at least a handful of the franchise's playoff failures over the years. But seriously, it's not a recipe for success in the toughest sports tournament in the world. At any rate, I feel like I'm about to re-watch a movie I've already seen before when observing the team's current fortunes, or lack thereof. This club was already on some shifting ice beneath it before the All-Star game bye week. They returned last Monday night with a road trip to Arizona and were handed a 3-2 loss when they let a game get away from them.

Sonju Two Harbors announced the long term partnership with Two Harbors Youth Hockey with the renaming of the Lake County Arena. Brad Anttila, Sonju vice president, says that it is about giving back to the community that has supported their business, and to give youth a positive opportunity. “We look forward to a healthy future for the organization and we are thrilled to be a big part of it with our pledge of $300,000,” said Anttila. A ribbon cutting took place on Thursday, February 9th at 6:30 PM at the Sonju Arena with the Lake County Chamber of Commerce and Two Harbors Youth Hockey Association. A ceremonial puck drop with Sonju General Manager, Bill Antilla, kicked off the start of the North Shore Boys Varsity home game vs. Proctor at 7:00 PM. Sonju Two Harbors invites the public to join in the celebration and cheer on the North Shore Storm. Lake County commissioner Rich Sve thanked Sonju for their “constant and continued service to our communities.” Sve drew the connection between his maternal great grandparents who moved to Lake County in 1918, and the Sonju family.
