Nature Nurtures

If you’re a houseplant enthusiast, now is a great time to give them some well-deserved attention. As daylight is increasing, our houseplants are awakening from a winter slumber. They soon will begin to add new spring growth. Good maintenance often amounts to healthy houseplants and helps to reduce future pest and disease problems. Make some time to give them each a good look over to see if dust has collected on their leaves. If so, mist them or carefully wipe them down with a damp cloth. If they are size compatible, place them in a sink or shower and gently run water over them. Be sure to let them drain any excess water to avoid root rot. Removing dust buildup ensures maximum surface area on leaves to absorb sunlight, as well as keeping their leaf pores or stomata fully functioning.

For centuries after his death, the festival of St. Valentine’s Day celebrated his brave compassion and faithfulness. People observed that Valentine’s name was especially appropriate. (It’s a form of the Latin valens, meaning strong and vigorous, the origin of English words like valiant and valor.)
