A few years ago Megan Brown-Holmes moved to the Two Harbors area with her family and soon discovered that there was no program for elementary students to learn to ski together. A native of the Iron Range and the SkiSparks program there, and an avid skier, Brown-Holmes went about filling this gap in a short time. In a year she generated community support as well as founding and equipping the North Shore Nordic Ski Sparks Club. Winter 2021 the club opened its doors for the first time. By 2022 it was operating at capacity, with 40 kids ages 4-14 participating. They meet on Sunday afternoons, weather-permitting, in January and February. Brown-Holmes’s enthusiasm for the program is catching. “I’ve been really happy with the level of interest here,” she says, “People definitely came out of the woodwork to help.” Skis are available for rental, making it more accessible to kids who do not come from skiing families.

Since 1996 Mike Valentine has provided leadership at the Enterprise Center in Two Harbors, often with little fanfare while creating a nurturing business environment for entrepreneurs and startups to become established and grow. Last week Valentine officially retired at age 82, and says that the low-key nature of the Enterprise Center, located on the Fairgrounds Road in Two Harbors, let new and growing businesses decide for themselves what announcements they wanted to make. A private nonprofit corporation built and formed in 1996, Valentine says the mission behind the Enterprise Center was to provide a safe place for businesses to grow. Building on county donated land with funding support from the Two Harbors Development Fund,IronRangeResources and Rehabilitation Board (IRRRB), Co-op Light and Power, and Great River Energy, the Enterprise Center started as a light industrial building, and moved in more refined directions over the years.
