Duluth, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Transportation would like to remind the public it is illegal to deposit snow on or next to a public highway or street and asks for help keeping roads clear for everyone’s safety. Snow on or near public roads can create hazards such as drainage, drifting and sight obstruction. Minnesota law and many local ordinances prohibit the plowing, blowing, shoveling or otherwise placing of snow onto public roads or sidewalks. This includes the ditch and right of way area along the roads. Violations are considered misdemeanors, but civil penalties also apply if the placement of snow creates a hazard, such as a slippery area, frozen rut or bump, that contributes to a motor vehicle or pedestrian crash. The civil liability can extend to both the property owner and the person who placed the snow. District 1 MnDOT maintenance crews plow and maintain more than 3,700 miles of state highways in northeast Minnesota. Crews are out around the clock during snow events to keep roads safe, so please give them plenty of space to work. Also remember, it takes time to clean up the roadways during and after a snowstorm. Traveling in Perilous Conditions into 2023 As all of us are aware, this winter season has been truly wintry, including a major winter storm mid-month, followed by bitterly cold weather leading into Christmas. On the upside, we have been provided with some breath taking sights--with snow laden trees sculpted into fantastical creatures and all the world looking white, bright, and beautiful.
I am sure New Year’s Resolutions are swarming around you. It is that time of year when we look back at the previous year- the good, the bad, and the unsure. We look ahead to the new year, a clean slate, with anticipation of all the new possibilities life could bring. Yet, many of us have the new gusto for a few days, weeks, or some even months to this new resolution. Resolution according to the Oxford Dictionary means: a firm decision to do or not to do something.
How a newspaper becomes designated for official publications; a chance for you to let local elected officials know what you think At the Lake County Press the New Year comes with it a chance to thank all of our readers, subscribers, and advertisers who have helped us launch this really ambitious newspaper. Amid much ado from many about “how we need a real newspaper again”, we have worked harder than you might know to build something from scratch with our heads, hearts, and patience all operating at max capacity.
This little flying squirrel is my choice to 'post ' this week. We only get to see them at our feeder in the dark of winter when they never fail to light up our lives. I am hoping that some Lake County Press readers will follow my lead and 'post ' some of their favorite photos in the paper.
