Part IV: Last week Dr. Cotton talked about the decline of physical exams by MDs. The Osteopathic Physician: While Osteopathy has always included physical measures such as manipulation and massage, and continues to do so, they have always been scientifically oriented. The early colleges were lacking in faculty, facilities, or curriculum sufficient to satisfy the academic accreditation requirements for medical education. Over a period of years, they corrected all these deficiencies, including the quality of applicants. Eventually they became recognized as the equivalent to the medical doctor (MD), and the doctor of Osteopathy (DO) for many years now, train together now in post-doctoral residency in all the specialties. Several DO’s have been among the providers of care for me personally. Alas, I fear that they refer to the lab, and limit the touch with its therapeutic benefits. DO’s are now found as staff and faculty at practically every major clinic and institution.
