Masked Fan Speaks

Goalie controversy in WILD land? I recall an interview earlier in the season whereby WILD GM Bill Guerin was asked what role he played relative to on-ice personnel decisions with the coaching staff. If my memory has some clarity here, GMBG basically claimed that it was zero, that he was content to let the coaching staff handle that.

Otto Anvil, a sturdy and patient man, wool shirt buttoned under his chin, found patience no longer a virtue. He was ready for the Great March for Community Newspapers to be on its way back to Lake County since he had just about run out of excuses to tell the townsfolk along Highway 23 in Carlton County who had hosted the throng since late winter last year. He was voted “ambassador of the year” by his peers, yet the award had a bit of a hollow ring to it as thousands of people milled about in the four small towns of Nickerson, Duquette, Kerrick and Bruno and his conscience took a beating. There was no friendlier person than Otto. God quickly noticed Otto’s dilemma and told him the final fire before departure was being prepared by none other than Wind Fire Lady and her good friends Lottie Dodd and her sister Hubadeedoodle Dodd, also known as Doodles.

From the Outside

Relics and Remnants. About fifty yards from my house a couple of low, woody sprouts of Labrador Tea grow in a small depression alongside a tip mound where a tree fell long ago.

Calling All Curlers!

The Two Harbors Kids Curling program started this year on November 13th and lasted until December 11th. During the program, we were a mixture of new and experienced young curlers learning how to score a game, different kinds of shots, and how to sweep for our teammates. We also learned the curling ABC’s: A – Align, B – Balance, and C – Curl, which are the steps to setting up and shooting the rock. We had the pleasure of learning from experienced curlers, with the teaching being led by Kay Libby, Colleen Holbeck, Claire Claflin, Melissa Grover, and Peter Harris. To start off each session, we were led in a warm up and stretch. Then, we were given an overview of the topics for the day, and we all headed to the ice. After an hour of putting the skills we learned into practice with games and some friendly competition, we found our way back inside to have a snack and review what we learned so far. After that, it’s back on the ice! We continued to practice and have games against each other for the last hour of the lesson. All in all, this was an extremely successful season of kids’ curl. We improved our skills and knowledge of the game immensely and had tons of fun while doing it!

Random Strangers

I'm pleased to introduce Jonee Vance and Mike Gareri who were out walking their dogs on the Two Harbors Ski Trail this autumn. They have recently moved to the area from Duluth and appeared to be having a good day on the trail. The Two Harbors Ski Trail Club was doing Trail maintenance getting the Ski Trail and the Bigfoot Snowshoe Trail ready for winter use.
