But the region’s mining industry remains cool to the potential by Marshall Helmberger reprinted courtesy of the Timerberjay, Ely BABBITT— In a makeshift basement laboratory here, Jeffrey Hanson is fine-tuning a process that could turn a cost-effective fix for one of the Iron Range’s biggest environmental problems into a job-producing enterprise. Hanson, a mechanical engineer by training, has been working for more than a decade on better ways to deal with waste and it’s led him to a way to effectively and affordably treat sulfate pollution from Iron Range mines.

Through a Child’s Eyes

You know the classic question every child is asked at some point: What do you want to be when you grow up? First of all, who says we have to grow up? Jobs, however, are pretty handy to have. Although I absolutely love my job, I was never a little girl who wanted to be a teacher when she grew up. I wasn’t even a young adult who wanted to be a teacher. My career working with children happened quite by accident after a series of unplanned life events. I first began working with kids at age 26, and I loved it so much I went back to college to get my teaching degree. The rest is history, and I get to live every day in the most fun and rewarding way.

Four Cross country Storm students compete at State

Four Storm team cross country team members participated at state level competition on November 3rd in Northfield, with all four clocking some of their best times ever. In regional news: Section 7AA, which covers much of Northeastern Minnesota, includes the Rock Ridge High School in Virginia. The Rock Ridge Boys team, led by Senior Cameron Stocke who took 2nd place with a time of 15:23.99, took an incredible 2nd place team finish at the state meet, coming in just two points behind the Mankato East High School and with an average split of 16:37 and no less than 7 PR’s (personal records) run by all 7 boys. The Rock Ridge Girls team also took an impressive 7th place team finish.
