TWO HARBORS, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) awarded Wilderness Health the 2022 Minnesota Rural Health Team Award for its significant contribution to improving rural health in Minnesota.
100 years ago today, Johnson Brothers & Company sent out 5,000 circulars to their former customers and have the Stanley plying the North Shore and have already shipped out two carloads of herring to the Chicago Market. Ronning Brothers have a tug plying the North Shore and Lake Shore Transportation Company, organized by Egge & Rise of Beaver Bay, had begun regular trips between Beaver Bay and Two Harbors.
How to improve access to information about what is happening throughout the city was a primary issue of discussion at Monday’s Silver Bay council meeting. Brought forward as a topic to discuss by council members who also serve on the city’s Economic Development Authority, Richard DeRosier and Shane Hoff, conversation focused on improving the city’s website.
The virtual premiere of local screendance artist Kayla Schiltgen, called object permanence, will take place the first Sunday in December. Screendance is a hybrid medium using dance and film to innovate movement language that solely exists on the screen.
On the quest to raising good humans, I realize that most people tend to use the holidays as a teachable time for kids. We encourage the need to do good for others who might have less than we do as we donate food, toys, money and help in our communities and beyond. We do this on overdrive in November and December because these months are within the “season of giving.” And while I wish this was more of a year-round notion; I still jump on board with my own three kids to embrace the season as a time to do for others with no expectation of gain. Many of the best ways to help others costs nothing at all, aside from some time and effort.
Upcycled Weaving Over the past few months, dozens of community members of all ages contributed to the creation of a colorful community art piece at the Silver Bay Public Library. This project, called “Upcycled Weaving,” repurposed castoff materials into a fun, interactive, collaborative creation.

Northland Foundation awards grants July through September 2022 During the 3rd quarter of 2022, the Northland Foundation awarded 30 grants totaling $796,000 to support people and communities for a thriving region. Seven grants were made in partnership with State of Minnesota funding to expand child care in the region, with $95,000 in total going to child care entities in Cloquet, Duluth, Ely, Finland, and Grand Marais.
Erin Fisher, 2019 graduate of Two Harbors High School, has been selected to participate in the Christmas in Christ Chapel at Gustavus Adolphus College. The production includes more than 350 performers and it combines music, dance, and theatrical presentations.
