From the Outside

American Socialism. When I was in high school a long time ago, I had a shop teacher who taught auto mechanics and drove to work every morning from his rural home an hour north of the city.

Random Strangers

Last week I introduced Zoe Halthaus to readers, and wanted to add some information that Zoe shared: 'I recently graduated from Kansas State University in May 2022, moved to Texas for an internship with Hill’s Pet Nutrition, and then I moved here to Minnesota for a fulltime position with Hill’s. I enjoy the outdoors both in the cold winter months along with the warm summer months. During my time outside I like to snow ski, go sledding, wakeboard, cruise around on my jet ski, and of course take a leisurely stroll on my paddle board or kayak. But I can definitely spend some time inside baking deserts and watching endless movies.' (Zoe Halthaus) Welcome to the northland, Zoe! I am happy to meet you.

Editor's note: The Exalted Shack Master and the reluctant editor were granted a stay from the impending Great March for Community Newspapers and allowed to open deer season at a deer camp far to the north. The pair would be hosted by another venerable reluctant editor, also in the community newspaper business. The Exalted Shack Master and a single subject recently paid a visit to faraway Camp Cholesterol and boy did we have fun.

Witnesses in the Northland return to door knocking after pandemic pause

Jehovah’s Witnesses resumed their trademark doorto- door ministry Sept. 1 when a two-and-a-half-year suspension of the work officially lifted, just in time to begin a global campaign featuring a new interactive Bible study program. The decision to resume their door-to-door ministry marked the complete restoration of all pre-pandemic in-person activities for the 1.3 million Jehovah’s Witnesses in the 13,000 congregations in the United States. Houses of worship (called Kingdom Halls) were reopened April 1, witnessing in public places resumed May 31 and in-person conventions are once again being planned for 2023.

DNR asking hunters to voluntarily send samples for chronic wasting tests

Deer hunting season is an important one in Lake County with gun opener this weekend, often involving building relationships between generations, spending quality time together, and honing hunting skills. Given the importance of the deer hunt to many northlanders, keeping it safe and sustainable is a top priority. This year, in addition to critical firearms safety, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is asking hunters to voluntarily share samples of their deer for chronic wasting disease testing. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) was detected in Itasca county near Grand Rapids earlier this year, and in seven other hunting zones in the southern part of the state in past years. Hunters that take a deer in one of the eight CWD zones are now required by the DNR this year to test their deer for CWD. Any deer harvested in those affected zones are also restricted in how they are moved outside of the zone. Movement restrictions for CWD zones means that the intact deer carcass cannot be moved outside of those zones.
